Background of the Study
Cardiovascular health disparities refer to the differences in heart disease outcomes among different population groups. In Enugu State, socioeconomic, geographic, and cultural factors contribute to significant variations in cardiovascular health. Disparities are evident between urban and rural communities, with access to healthcare, education, and healthy lifestyle options varying widely (Eze, 2023; Nwankwo, 2024). Urban residents may benefit from better healthcare facilities and health education, while rural communities often face challenges such as limited medical infrastructure and lower health literacy. These disparities result in unequal burdens of heart disease, with vulnerable populations experiencing higher rates of hypertension, heart attacks, and other cardiovascular conditions. Addressing these disparities is critical for ensuring equitable health outcomes and reducing overall disease burden. This study aims to examine the extent and determinants of cardiovascular health disparities in Enugu State, with a focus on identifying key factors that contribute to unequal access to preventive and treatment services.
Statement of the Problem
In Enugu State, cardiovascular health disparities remain a persistent challenge, with significant differences in heart disease prevalence and outcomes among various demographic groups. Rural areas and low-income communities face a disproportionate burden due to limited access to quality healthcare, poor health education, and inadequate preventive measures. These disparities contribute to delayed diagnoses, suboptimal treatment, and higher mortality rates from cardiovascular diseases (Okafor, 2023). The existing healthcare system struggles to address these inequities due to resource limitations, uneven distribution of services, and cultural barriers. Without targeted interventions to bridge these gaps, the overall public health impact of cardiovascular diseases will continue to widen, exacerbating social and economic inequities. A thorough investigation into the factors driving these disparities is essential to inform policy decisions and design programs that promote equitable cardiovascular health across Enugu State.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases among different population groups in Enugu State.
2. To identify key socioeconomic and geographic factors contributing to cardiovascular health disparities.
3. To propose interventions aimed at reducing inequities in cardiovascular health.
Research Questions
1. What are the differences in cardiovascular disease prevalence among various demographic groups in Enugu State?
2. What socioeconomic and geographic factors contribute to these health disparities?
3. What strategies can be implemented to reduce cardiovascular health inequities?
Research Hypotheses
1. Lower socioeconomic status is significantly associated with higher cardiovascular disease prevalence.
2. Rural residency correlates with reduced access to cardiovascular healthcare services.
3. Targeted public health interventions will reduce cardiovascular health disparities.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on comparing cardiovascular health outcomes among different demographic groups in Enugu State. Data will be collected through health records, surveys, and interviews. Limitations include potential data variability and challenges in reaching remote populations.
